IFF National Ranking System - Explanation

A new national ranking system was introduced from the beginning of the 2002/03 season. The main purpose of this system is to encourage more regular participation by home-based fencers in competitions. The basic principles of the system are:

  1. Every fencer who enters in a competition will receive ranking points.
  2. Most individual senior Irish fencing competitions are included, and also the Junior Nationals. Results from competitions abroad are not included. The only non-IFF event considered in the rankings is the Northern Ireland Open.
  3. Results of other international competitions will not be included in the rankings.
  4. Team events are not included in the ranking system.

Competitions Considered in the rankings are:

Irish Open, Northern Ireland Open, National Championships, East of Ireland Open, Federation Cup, Dublin Epee, The Vinnie, South of Ireland Open, Junior National Championships and Intermediates. The rankings will roll over from year to year, so a full year’s competition results will always be included, but only the latest results of any competition.

Points will be awarded as follows:

Competition Weighting:

No weighting is given to individual competitions, except the Junior National Championships and Intermediates, which will receive 2/3 points. The national ranking system will be reviewed at the end of the year and changes made as required. Competition gradings based on number and quality fencers may be considered.
